Governor’s executive order expands tax relief for Los Angeles disaster victims

On February 4, 2025, Governor Newsom signed Executive Order N-17-25, which among other things:

  • Extends the current property tax relief, which suspends until April 10, 2026, penalties, costs, or interest for failure to pay property taxes, to properties located in zip codes 91024, 91103, and 91367. It also postpones the filing deadline to file business personal property tax statements until April 1, 2026. Previously, this property tax relief was limited to properties located in 15 zip codes in Los Angeles County; and
  • Provides a three-month extension for Los Angeles businesses to provide documentation to the CDTFA to support their application for penalty and interest relief for failure to timely and pay sales and use taxes due January 30, 2025. Previously, the Governor had provided an automatic three-month extension to file and pay the January 30 sales and use tax returns and payments but only for those businesses whose 2024 third quarter return was for less than $1 million in tax.
